What are McDonald’s Apple Pies?

McDonald’s apple pies are a popular dessert item on the McDonald’s menu, known for their sweet, tangy apple filling encased in a flaky, tender crust. They were introduced to the McDonald’s menu in 1968, and have since become a beloved choice among patrons. Originally, these pies were deep-fried, but in 1992, McDonald’s transitioned to baking them to appeal to health-conscious consumers. The apple filling typically has a mix of sweet and tart flavors, while the crust is lightly sweetened and baked to a golden brown. Over the years, McDonald’s has slightly tweaked the recipe but the core essence of a comforting, warm apple pie has remained the same.

The apple pies feature a blend of American-grown apples encased in a pastry shell, baked to perfection, and often topped with a sprinkling of sugar. Although the exact recipe and apple varieties may vary from region to region or season to season, the fundamental appeal of McDonald’s apple pies lies in their comforting taste and nostalgic appeal to many. They provide a quick, convenient way for customers to enjoy a classic dessert on the go.

How to Make McDonald’s Apple Pie

McDonald’s recipe is incredibly innovative. While other recipes use a thickening agent to keep the apple filling together since apples release a considerable amount of liquid during cooking, McDonald’s recipe requires dehydrated apple powder which helps soak up the liquid released from the apples, making the pie taste even more apple-y. And who doesn’t want a double punch of apple flavor when eating an apple pie?

However, we’ve found a homemade version that uses even a better and healthier apple pie mixture. Another important factor when making the perfect apple pie is letting it cook for the right amount of time.

If you don’t cook the pastry long enough, it won’t cook all the way through and you’ll get a gooey pastry in the middle. If you cook it on high heat, the pastry will brown too fast, and you don’t want that. It’s best to reduce the heat and let it cook evenly.

When it comes to the frying method, you can use an electric fryer or the stove. You can fry your apple pies in a wok or a deep frying pan. Even though using a fryer would be the easiest and fastest way to cook your pies, we recommend using a wok.

The great thing about making your own McDonald’s cinnamon flavored apple pies is that you have more control over how they are made and what they are made with. The fact is, most fast food, including sweet dishes, contains plenty of fat, carbs, sodium, sugar, and calories which is not good for our health if eaten too often.

On the other hand, homemade versions give you a chance to adjust the recipes and ingredients to make food a little bit healthier.

No matter how hard it seems to make this sweet dessert, it’s really not. You’ll need not more than an hour and no special cooking experience to make them as a treat for breakfast or a quick dessert.

The ingredients are simple and easy to find, so you really have no excuse for not trying to make them at least once.

You can enjoy them on their own, or combine them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or caramel sauce.

Ingredients

  • 3 green apples

  • 1 teaspoon 1 ground cinnamon

  • 4 tablespoons 4 brown sugar

  • 2 puff pastry, thawed

  • 1 teaspoon 1 ground nutmeg

  • Vegetable oil to taste

  • egg wash

  • lemon juice

Directions

  • Peel and dice the apples and put them in a medium saucepan.
  • Add cinnamon, brown sugar, and nutmeg and cook for ten minutes. Stir from time to time until the apples soften.
  • Remove from heat and let the apple mixture cool for half an hour.
  • Cut each puff pastry into four pieces. Lightly wet their edges with water using your finger.
  • Put a small amount of the softened apples, about two tablespoons, onto the half of the puff pastry.
  • Fold it over and press the edges of the pastry together with a fork.
  • Brush the pastry’s edges with a little egg wash.
  • Store the pies in the fridge for about 15 minutes to let the pastry firm up.
  • Heat some vegetable oil in a wok at medium heat and cook a few pies at a time for about 3 minutes, or until the pastry is cooked through and golden brown.
  • Place the cooked pies on a plate lined with paper towels so that they can drain the excess oil.
  • Serve them and enjoy while warm.

Notes

  • A dusting of cinnamon sugar will take these apple pies over the top. Mix some cinnamon and granulated sugar in a bowl, and sprinkle it all over the pies right after removing them from the oil. This will make them even more delicious.
  • You can try adding some butter in the apple mixture while cooking for a creamier filling.

Additional Tips

  • You can serve them with some caramel sauce or vanilla ice cream.
  • Instead of frying, you can try baking your apple pies. This will make them healthier without losing their wonderful taste.
  • If you have any leftovers, keep them at room temperature under an upturned bowl or cake dome. This will keep the pastry crisp. To enjoy them later, rewarm them in a hot oven.
  • Using baking sheets is when you will cut your pasty into rectangles.
