Check it out, Huskies fans. Northeastern has new athletics logos.
Athletics Director Jeff Konya unveiled the new logos and typography on Tuesday night in East Village.
The King Husky mascot will serve as the university’s new athletics logo, with two versions: the Husky head and a full standing Husky. Other forms of the logo feature either of the King Husky logos combined with the university’s “N” monogram. New “Northeastern” and “Huskies” wordmarks for athletics were also unveiled.
“The inspiration for this comes from modern tattoo art,” said Konya, who led the effort with Brian Sullivan, vice president and chief marketing officer at Northeastern.“King Husky is regal. His eyes are away and upward and really trained on the future ahead.”
Konya said the goal of the project was to create a “bold, innovative, and striking new concept.” Northeastern Athletics teamed up with the university’s marketing department to design the new logos and typography, which were unveiled after six months of university-wide collaboration.
The new logos, which will be seen throughout campus, will replace the existing logos during the fall semester. They will appear on the uniforms, gear, and promotional material for all Northeastern varsity, club, and recreational sports.
The logos will receive various treatments. For example, the head of King Husky might be emblazoned inside a ring of words that read “Northeastern University 1898,” or the “N” monogram might be found inside a shield on the shoulder patch of an athletics jersey.
Apparel with the new logo will be available for purchase at the campus bookstore and at Northeastern.bncollege.com. Team-specific gear will also be available via GoNU.com in the coming weeks.
Athletics is retiring both the half black, half red “Split-N” logo and the “paw” logo. The current red-eyed Husky logo, which is traditionally associated with men’s ice hockey, will serve as a retro logo that will be used on special occasions.
The new logos and typography come on the heels of the Huskies’ most successful season in school history. Northeastern finished 2017-18 with four conference championships and two regular-season titles. Seven teams competed at their respective national championships, the most in school history, and the men’s hockey team captured its first Beanpot in 30 years.
Student-athletes from Northeastern’s Division I programs combined to earn a total of 48 trophies and conference awards. Adam Gaudette, who is now playing for the Vancouver Canucks of the NHL, became the first Northeastern player in school history to win the prestigious Hobey Baker Award.
The logos were unveiled as part of the Howlin’ Huskies Coaches Caravan tour, which is making stops in Boston, New York, and Cape Cod this month. The events include remarks from Konya on the future of Northeastern Athletics, meet-and-greets and Q&As with Northeastern coaches, and opportunities for fans to take photos with the Beanpot and conference championship trophies.
