Because I, a regular girl who knows nothing about anything, watched the 2024 Golden Globes Awards. So, don't come at me.Picture this:A man tells a sexist joke at an award show, a room full of sophistication featuring some of the most influential women, renowned performers, and forward-thinking directors who have been breathing life back into the cinema. And, unfortunately, some people laughed. A mantells a sexist joke at an award show, and by the end of the night, instead of questioning if he deserves to be on stage, or why we give a platform to those who recycle uninspiring content and stereotype women based on appearance, there is this discussion about whether woman’s reaction (not laughing at the joke) was too much. A man tells a sexist joke at an award show, while the show specifically acknowledges the crucial role of writers in the industry. But before that, a room filled with writers greenlit the joke, expressing approval with nods and laughter, deeming it fit for comedic purposes. Surprisingly, not a single colleague offered a cautionary note, raising awareness about the potential outrage it might spark.Last but not least, many sophisticated and powerful people said many things at an award show that specificallyfocused on the power of writers to change the world, and yet not a single voice, be it a writer,a director,an actor,a man oreven a woman, dared to address the harsh realities of our times.#ceasefirenow

While I do not know this man or his work, the content in this NPR report concerns me. Here's the link: https://lnkd.in/gqZKtZA3It is about Hasan Minhaj's response to an article in The New Yorker which accuses him of serial lying. In it, Minhaj responds in a 21 minute video that details his concerns about the article. He maintains that The New Yorker is hypocritical in its selection of facts to check. Similarly, Minhaj distinguishes between the need for accuracy required by his political comedy and the elasticity of facts in his stand up.This flap up grieves me. Comedy is often one of the most significant tools we have in our society for addressing some of our most contentious subjects. It encourages us to laugh instead of going to blows. We have violence pouring into so many aspects of our lives--places where a few decades ago we could hardly have imagined like places of worship, bowling alleys, and elementary schools. So the stage, where the stand up comedian tells a story that gets at truth without the need to be entirely factual, reconciles in my mind, particularly when it helps us gain a little more understanding of another's humanity. I am interested, too, because next year my book will be published. It takes an irreverent look at Black history--rather like street life and a study guide met Drunk History at a bar. My co-author (Hoke Glover III) and I try to disappear in the writing, which is different than comedians like Hasan Minhaj or Dave Chappelle (who has also come under scrutiny for his stand up comedy). The spotlight is literally on them in a way that it is not on us. Nevertheless, comedy is the place we have turned in order to explore some really difficult truths. I get it. Truth has come under attack in recent years when folks are willing to put forth "alternative facts" as viable substitutions for actual facts. But anyone who ever tried to tell a funny story knows that sometimes facts strangle comedy. I reiterate, that I do not know this man or his work. I haven't been watching The Daily Show. So I don't have a position on this scandal. But I do wonder, with our politics so polarized in our nation today, where do we go to find a shared understanding on some of our most difficult issues? I hope that we still find ways to share laughter.

'The New Yorker' fact-checked Hasan Minhaj — now he's issued a rebuttal npr.org

https://lnkd.in/eceSug26Queen Camilla has already starred in drama series soap EastEnders. Do you think she may make a guest appearance on Big Brother? Can you imagine or are we more likely to see Harry pop up again advertising his latest book? I would put a homeless person in there, someone with nothing. What would they learn in terms of a social experiment?Ex-Prime Minister, Boris Johnson took a nosedive in popularity towards the end of his career. MPs like Matt Hanco*ck have been on I'm a Celebtity. Who knows now the show has changed to the same channel? We have already had MP George Osbourne tragic impersonation of a puss* cat. If Greta Thunberg could be persuaded to sell out to reality TV, imagine the conversations between them in this social experiment.Maybe the show will just be legalised p*rn again? With furtive rumpy pumpy under whitesheets from nubile woke milennals whi will furtively go to the Diary Room the next day for morning after pills, so no little brothers and sisters will appear 9 months later. Imagine putting real life nuns in there, sharing the room. Now that would be a social experiment. Finally what about using the world platform to engage the greatest minds to find a cure for multiple sclerosis ?I imagined in 2022 the return of Big Brother.I ponder the audience, purpose and situation Will the budget stretch to integrating a Royal or MP back into British society? Or will it sell out to the Love Island Culture or the Woke Police culture? Or maybe it will be useful and find a cure for MS? Will they roll out the voice of God again? Or have there been budget cuts in these austere times. What opposites will cause max drama? #ITV2 #ITVX #BigBrother2023. I imagine the various scenarios in the role of a Producer. In 2022 Big Brother had not been on TV for many years and this fiction imagined a comeback. #channel5 #channel 4 #willbest #MarcusBentley #DavinaMcCall #RylanClarke #BBUK #bigbrother2023

Do or did you have a stammer growing up?Known as a stutter in the US, Emily Blunt and actor Andrew Scott grew up with one.So did Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson.Andrew Scott's mother sent him to drama to help.Emily Blunt found it helpful too.Inhabiting a role helps. In the Women's Hour episode on 28 November, you can hear two people with stammers being interviewed. As I heard that interview on BBC Sounds on my lunchtime dog walk, one young woman described it as her super power.Good for her! But having listened to both of them talk about the anxiety of having to communicate from an early age and the impact on their whole selves, I wondered. Not everyone with a speech impediment or learning difficulty embraces this reframing. As audiences, we struggle too. There is so much to learn about how to show up for other people. The best takeaway?WAIT!Don't try to finish the sentence of a stutterer.Just wait. Maintain kind eye contact if you can, and be patient. What do you struggle with and what can your audience do to help?It was delightful to have a coffee with fellow professional, Susannah Stobart yesterday and catch up about this and all things speech, empowerment, competence and communication related.Susannah is a Speech and Language Therapist and I'm a Voice and Speech Coach. Depending what you want to accomplish, you may wish to speak to one of us at some stage. We're also happy to do a Discovery Call if you're not sure what you need, and to refer each other if you need us to help you figure that out.#stammering #stutteringawareness #effectivecommunication #audienceengagement https://lnkd.in/eDx3eFY7

Are you obsessed with The Traitors? I’m all in. And I have some *things* to say. Spoilers below! The groupthink at play, and what it reveals about unconscious biases and power dynamics is absolutely fascinating. We gravitate towards those that look, sound and act like us. Anyone who falls outside of this narrow definition is “suspicious”. Meg was too quiet, even though other players were just as quiet. Anthony was too loud and aggressive, even though other players were as loud and direct. Jonny was too friendly. The fact that so many murdered players came from marginalised backgrounds is not a surprise. If you’re a white man, you can get away with more deviant behaviour. You get to play the hero. In fact, the traitorous men can’t help themselves but play the hero. They get carried away by their own success. If you’re a woman, you’ve got to hide your intelligence and be quiet to survive. Don’t start getting clever or acting bold, you’ll be killed off. Jasmine is there because the she has called out the Traitors and they’re terrified of getting rid of her because it points to them. But that will probably change soon - she’ll be banished because of her deviance from the norm of the group. If you’re young and attractive, you can get away with murder. They should have made Molly a traitor, no one would have suspected her. Ever. If you’re old and mischievous, you’ll get cut immediately. RIP sonja and Aubrey, they would have both been fantastic TV. I don’t think the Traitors deliberately set out to murder women, but the trope is so well entrenched in our minds, and the women have been strong players this season, that unconscious gender biases are playing out on screen. Huge kudos to Claudia for calling it out “another man, just like the old days”. Best moments of the series so far? Paul’s betrayal of Ash. Diane’s reveal of her son. Claudia’s wardrobe - especially *that* red jumper 👀Someone give Claudia and her stylist a BAFTA already. Agree? Disagree? Who’s your favourite to win? #thetraitors #unconsciousbias #no4thfloor

Looking for an agent...What makes ABOUT I DO unique is not the storyline.Yes, it is hilarious! Award winning actors have gone out of their way to personally compliment the writing. Yes, it’s about multi-generational relationships that are complicated, timely, and filled with angst. Loyalty, Family, Trust, Wisdom, Heritage, Romance—check!Betrayal, Adventure, Danger, Suspense, Mystery, (even a car chase), Rescue, Love—check! A surprise ending out of nowhere that will make you cry—Of Course. But what makes ABOUT I DO unique deals with the conventional Three Act Story Structure. At the end of Act Two there is generally a lull where the audience can go for refreshments or wait for the ultimate, anticipated resolution and climax. ABOUT I DO doesn’t allow that to happen.ABOUT I DO has two major story lines and a half dozen mini-conflicts between bridesmaids, groomsmen, parents and even Reverend Tony. The primary story pits the two lovers, William and Tiffany/Bride and Groom against social norms and what they expect from each other. The story follows a traditional path with a lot more awkward moments than you would expect. It checks all the boxes and has a wonderful ending. But the sleeper story is about Grampa Fred and Grammy Hazel. They are the real stars of the show. It’s the reason Ed Asner called me up ten years ago while I was mowing my lawn to tell me I had to expand his character’s story before he could take it. The foundation for the second story line takes place early on in the first act and develops slowly through antidotal stories by Grammy Hazel. In the middle of the Second Act—at the height of the drama when Tiffany is about to be swept out to sea in her wedding gown by a rip current—she reveals the second story line as she flashes back to her first meeting with William at his Grandfather’s Wake.(Grampa Fred was blown out to sea after Grammy Hazel took him skydiving on Valentine’s Day.)As the rescue ensues, the lover’s reunite, the bedraggled wedding party almost get arrested on the way back, and Grampa Fred’s story evolves, locking the audience in their seats. In the end, ABOUT I DO become not just another Romantic Comedy… but a STORY. The audience goes in expecting popcorn and is delighted when it includes steak, lobster and a vintage wine. Please request the screenplay.I am looking for representation.William R.
